Secret's of the Cave:
A part of
South Thailand's landscape, which attracts the most attention, is the dramatic
limestone crags, which can rise up to more than 900 meters high.
These where formed around 260 million years ago when
shallow seas running the length of southern Asia, slowly built up deep
deposits of shells and corals, which where later buried under sediments
washed in from the land. Compressed deep in the earth the calcium carbonate
remains formed limestone.
About 30 million years ago, a collision between the Indian
sub continent and mainland Asia occurred pushing up a 5,000 km ancient
reef line. Fluctuating sea levels during the ice age caused wave
erosion and for millenniums monsoons have also helped to dissolve this
soft sedimentary rock giving us this amazing terrain, creating chambers
and passageways, creating natural habitats to many animals and plants.
